Tonight my mama cat (named Lauren) had her first and only litter of 5 kittens. She is young herself but she did not have a difficult time, thank God. I swear I was more nervous than when my daughter gave birth, twice. She started in labor just as I was going to bed. About midnight she had her first, and I paniced. Not because there was a problem but because this was new to me and I didn’t know what to do. My husband said “do nothing unless there is a problem.” Of course this made perfect sense to everyone but me. Anyway I got through it. The first kitten was all black with white paws. I should have mentioned that Lauren is all black and the father (Humphrey) is black with white feet and chest. The second kitten was all white. My daughter claimed that one right away. All was going well. The next one was a light gray. “Beautiful” I said, “I am keeping that one.” The fourth kitten was born about 45 minutes later. I was getting worried again. This one was all black as well. The fifth and last came another 45 minutes later and was a darker shade of gray. I tried several times to go upstairs to bed but Lauren kept fallowing me arouond instead of tending to her litter, so I decided to put my pillows on the floor beside her and try to sleep. Impossible! By this time of course both my husband and daughter had long since gone to bed. Well I saw the sun come up and I had also seen it go down just hours before. It is now 6:45 a.m. and I just made a pot of coffee. I expect neither my hubby or daughter will have a problem with me having some well deserved sleep today.
